Evaluation: Question 2

How does your media production represent particular social groups?

Horror movies are usually rated 15/18 because the content can be graphic, for example the sexualisation of a woman. Because our target audience is for teens, our media product does not include any references of a sexual nature.

A typical stereotype of women is being weak and vulnerable. We used this stereotype in our film opening as our primary character is alone and doesn't have a 'hero' to protect her from danger, which at this point in time highlights her weakness when alone.

Dating back to the 1800's, gender stereotypes were only moved against in the 1960's. Feminist activists rallied, questioning the biased female stereotypes, gaining support up until present day. In film women are often made into sexual objects of beauty and domesticity, often portrayed as the traditional "damsel in distress". Acknowledgement of womens strength, power and independence is virtually unheard of in the world of film, in fact they are usually portrayed with unrealistic beauty standards. In today's society, it is becoming increasingly common for the primary role in a film to be filled by a strong female character.

With all of this taken into consideration, we wanted to show the independence of women and make sure the audience are only shown a realistic female. Overall, we are happy with our choice of character because it challenges the female representation in current horror movies.
