Evaluation: Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute my media product and why?

Our horror film will be distributed by 'Blumhouse Productions'  which was founded in 2000, is an American film and television production company, founded by Jason Blum. Blumhouse is mostly known for producing low-budget horror films, such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Sinister, Split and Get Out. In 2014, Blumhouse produced the Academy Award–nominated drama film Whiplash, for which Blum was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The company currently has a 10-year first-look deal with the studio Universal Pictures.

Paranormal activity had a budget of only $15 thousand and grossed $193.4 million where the highest grossing countries were the United Kingdom ($8.5 million), France ($2.4 million) and Russia ($2.3 million). The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating of 83%, based on 218 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10

From this data, it is clear to say that 'Blumhouse productions' would be a great to distribute our film as many positive reviews are given to the movies that attracted a mass audience. However, realistically our film was created on a extremely low budget and uses no special effects therefore, it would realistically be an independent film like 'Ex Machina' which grossed $25 million on a low budget.

We could also release the film on different platforms, for example, Netflix . We will have limited distribution costs which means these are cheaper platforms for the target audience to watch it apposed to the cinema.
